Casa dos Lagares is a family business located in Cheires, in Douro region, which has been linked to wine and vineyards for several generations. It was founded in the XVII century, a “morgadio” (rich farmer´s house), being built a house (with a tower, still existing), a chapel (from 1659) and other buildings that established a farm and that were the origin of the current village of Cheires. This is the starting point of this story.

Initially the production of fruits, cereals and horticulture were the main activities of the farm. The growth of port wine exportation lead to the progressive enlargement of the vineyard area in the Douro Region and its demarcation. Initial crops are replaced by vineyards and olive oil, which become the main activity of the farm, giving rise to new structures such as wine and olive oil mills.

At the beginning of the century were made the first attempts to commercialize bottled wines, and new technologies, labels, and even brands appear (although no registration was currently required). In recent years the area of vines has been renewed, with the aim of mechanizing it and selecting the best grape varieties. Wine production and marketing were resumed and this stimulating challenge included the progressive restoration of heritage, maintaining its originality, creating authentic scenery and spaces for culture and leisure. With over three centuries of history, this heritage has its own path and tradition, rooted in winemaking. It all reflects cycles of change and constant adaptation to new challenges, aware that there is no future without knowing and assuming the past.
